What is Gait Analysis

Gait analysis is the systematic study of human motion, using the eye and the brain of observers, augmented by instrumentation for measuring body movements, body mechanics, and the activity of the muscles. Gait analysis is used to assess, plan, and treat individuals with conditions affecting their ability to walk or run. It is also commonly used in physical therapy and sports bio-mechanics to help athletes run more efficiently and to identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries.

A typical gait analysis lab has several cameras placed around a walkway or a treadmill, which are linked to a computer. The patient has markers located at various points of reference of the body (e.g. iliac spines of the pelvis, ankle malleolus, and the condyles of the knee), or groups of markers applied to half of the body segments. The patient walks down the catwalk or the treadmill and the computer calculates the trajectory of each marker in three dimensions. A model is applied to calculate the movement of the underlying bones. This gives a complete breakdown of the movement of each joint.

Medical Motion offers several gait analysis systems designed specifically for your medical practice, physical therapy, or running sports requirements. We have one, two and three camera systems that capture human gait movement in ultra-slow motion so our gait analysis software provides the practitioner with real time data to asses an individual’s walking or running gait.

Physical Therapists are using our gait analysis systems and video motion software to successfully treat patient biomechanical deficiencies.  A few minutes on a treadmill with high speed cameras capturing an individual’s gait utilizing our excellent video motion analysis software, provides real time data to accurately diagnose all types of gait related injuries or to improve an athlete’s sport performance.  This instant feedback between clinical technicians and patient is invaluable in discovering or preventing gait related injuries.  How we walk and run – our biomechanical movement can be analyzed to prevent injury or enhance performance.

Our clientele include major hospitals, colleges and universities, military health and wellness centers, physical therapy centers, major league baseball teams, golf training centers, and running shoe stores.  With our gait analysis camera systems with video motion software capturing individual bio-mechanical movement, all practitioners and patients alike will be amazed by physical gait diagnostics to treat and prevent all types of functional movement injuries.
